Ken Gloss, internationally recognized rare book specialist, appraiser, and frequent guest on television. Ken is the second-generation owner of the Brattle Book Shop in Boston—one of the oldest antiquarian bookstores in the country, dating back to around 1825. In this special presentation, he will share stories from his decades-long career in the rare book world.
He’ll talk about growing up in the book business, the rich history of his iconic bookstore, and some of the most surprising and “improbable finds” he’s encountered. Ken will also explain how he appraises books and manuscripts, offer tips on building and maintaining a meaningful collection, and share fascinating anecdotes about both private collectors and institutions.
Following the talk and question-and-answer session, Ken will give free verbal appraisals of books participants have on hand or will do so at his shop in Boston at a later scheduled date.
Ken Gloss appraises books and libraries for Harvard, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern, Simmons, Suffolk, Tufts, Babson, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the FBI and others. He lectures on the antiquarian book field to library groups, historical societies and other book-interested groups throughout the New England area.
Appearing on numerous local and national television (including Antiques Roadshow) and radio programs, Ken is often featured talking about books and their values. He also has written many articles on appraising books, book collecting and selling.
